Darling Dickens

Today the world celebrates the 200th birthday of the marvellous writer Charles Dickens. He is one of the most influential and respected writers and what's even better is that he's British! Dickens published over a dozen major novels, a large number of short stories (including a number of Christmas-themed stories), a handful of plays, and several non-fiction books in his lifetime. His works have always been popular, many of his novels were written in monthly instalments for magazines. His works have been adored by adults and children alike from Oliver Twist, The Christmas Carol to David Copperfield and Bleak house there is a Dickens book for everyone.

Clockwise; The master himself; birthplace of Charles, now a museum; 48 Doughty Street where Charles lived from 1837 until 1839, also a museum; Google honours Dickens' 200th birthday; a photograph of his wonderful works; a pub in London named after the writer.

I used to shy away from Charles Dickens' books thinking I would never get 'into' them but I am so glad I picked up Oliver Twist and realised what an amazing writer he is. I've also read A Christmas Carol and David Copperfield and am currently reading Great Expectations. If you have never ventured into the world of Dickens I implore you to do so! You can download many of his works for free for Kindle (if you click the Google sign it helpfully brings you to a page of download links.)

Thank you Charles for writing such wonderful stories. Happy Birthday Sir!
